The Northern Pintail, Ansas acuta, is an elegant dabbling duck.

Male Northern Pintail
One of the most striking features of the male Northern Pintail is is long, slender tail. The male also has a chocolate-coloured head with a white stripe and a white breast.

Female Northern Pintail
The female Northern Pintail (right) lacks the striking plumage of the male and is mostly marbled-brown in colour. Both sexes have gray bills and legs and brown eyes. During non-breeding, the male is somewhat duller that during breeding time. The Northern Pintail feeds on vegetation, algae, seeds and insects by dabbling.

Northern Pintails in the winter
The Northern Pintail breeds across northern North America and over winters in warmer coastal areas and Central America. It is a fast-flying bird, 25 in/64 cm long (the female is smaller) with a wingspan of 34 in/86 cm.
