#38 - The Canada Goose

The Canada Goose, Branta canadensis, is a large, beautiful bird and is perhaps
one of the mostly easily recognizable and familiar birds in North America.

The Canada Goose is native to North America and found all over the continent as well as in Greenland and has been introduced to Europe. Some migrate vast distances to warmer climates in the winter. When doing so they fly in the familiar V-shape formation and you can often hear them honking as they go by.

The Canada Goose is primarily a herbivore feeding on grasses, leaves, roots, plants and grains. When in water it feeds from the silt at the bottom of the water or by dabbling. Both the male and female look alike with grayish-brown bodies, long black neck and head with white cheeks and throats. Scientists have determined that there are several sub-species, with some being much larger than others.

The Canada Goose is very family oriented, mating for life. The population is the Canada Goose is expanding in some cities and overpopulation is becoming a problem. Parents can be very aggressive protectors of their young.
