#37 - The Common Goldeneye
| |
The Common Goldeneye, Bucephala clangula, is a delightful
medium-sized,
somewhat chubby-looking diving duck found in rivers, lakes and coastal areas.
| |
The male and female differ tremendously, but both have orange legs and the characteristic yellow eyes. The male is also somewhat larger than the female. Both are great divers and dive for fish, insects, crustaceans and mollusks. |

The male Common Goldeneye has an iridescent green head with a white circle below the eye and black bill. The rest of its body is mostly white with a black back, tail and side markings. During breeding time, the male puts on a courtship display by throwing its head back and and twisting its body. |

The female Common Goldeneye has a mostly black bill, brown head and and brownish-gray body with a couple of white patches. Eggs are laid in nests built in cavities of trees or nesting boxes, |
