#28 - The Turkey Vulture
| |
The Turkey Vulture, Cathartes aura, is a magnificent flyer, often seen
gliding across the sky, soaring and moving gracefully with the thermals.
| |
The Turkey Vulture gets its name because of its slight resemblance to the Wild Turkey. It is sometimes called a Turkey Buzzard, or simply "Buzzard" however, it's not a buzzard at all, in fact there are no true buzzards in North America. |
| |
The Turkey Vulture has a keen sense of smell and vision and is able to detect the smell of decay gases given off by dead animals. It is a scavenger, not a hunter, and feeds on whatever carrion it can find. The featherless head allows it to easily dig into its food, while avoiding getting blood on its feathers. |
| |
It has a rather small head in proportion to the rest of its body. The males and females are identical, except the female is a bit larger. It is about 27 in/69 cm long with an incredible wingspan of 5.5 ft/1.8 m. |
