#11 - The Rock Squirrel

As its name suggests, the Rock Squirrel, Spermophilus variegatus, is at home scurrying
around rocky areas, cliffs, canyon walls and piles of boulders. |

The Rock Squirrel is also very able tree climber. It feeds primarily on nuts, seeds and fruit but also consumes carrion, eggs, young birds, insects and other invertebrates. |

The Rock Squirrel is a ground squirrel but with its long bushy tail it resembles more of a tree squirrel than a ground squirrel. It is generally mottled brownish-gray in colour with a buff underside. Its total length is 17-21 in ( 43-53 cm) which includes its tail that is about the same length as the body and head. |

The Rock Squirrel is found across the southwest, ranging from Colorado, west to southern Nevada, east to Oklahoma and south to Mexico. |
