The Cactus Wren is a resident of the deserts of the southern United States and northern Mexico. It is often spotted sitting on top of a cactus. At 7-8.75 in/18-22 cm long, it is the largest wren in North America.

It is characterized by its white eye stripe, brown cap as well as a long, curved bill which is uses to
probe
for food on the ground or in branches. It eats insects and spiders as well as some fruit and seeds. |

The Cactus Wren has the amazing ability to somehow avoid the needles of cactus plants and spiny trees and shrubs. It often builds its domed nest between the arms of a cactus where the eggs and young are protected from predators. Often, several nests are built as decoys. |
