#11 - The Trumpeter Swan

Measuring over 5 ft/1.5 m long and with a wingspan of almost 7 ft/2 m, the Trumpeter Swan,
Cygnus buccinator, is North American's largest waterfowl and the world's largest swan.

This magnificent creature has wonderful, unmistakable "honk honk" call that sounds a lot like the horns of antique cars. It was once on the brink of extinction but fortunately is now making a comeback.


The Trumpeter Swan is white all over with black legs and long, black bill. There is a patch of black facial skin stretching from the eyes to the bill which forms a V shape. When flying, its long neck is outstretched. It also takes advantage of its long neck when feeding, stretching it down in the water to get at aquatic plants.

The Trumpeter Swan nests in the secluded regions of northwestern North America and in remote lakes. It prefers fresh water but will winter in coastal waters.
