Hairy Woodpecker, Picoides villosus
The Hairy Woodpecker is one of the most widely distributed woodpeckers in North America. It is somewhat similar in appearance to the smaller Downy Woodpecker, but has a long, black bill which is just about as long as the head is deep. The male (above) and female (below) are similar in appearance except the female lacks the red patch on the back of her head.
