November 2012 - Yellow Rattle

Yellow Rattle, Rhinanthus minor
Yellow Rattle, Rhinanthus minor
Yellow Rattle gets its common name from the fact that the seeds rattle around in the capsule in which they are produced before they are dispersed by the wind. Yellow Rattle is native to Europe and western Asia, but is now found across Canada and in parts of the northern United States. It likes to grow in meadows and is somewhat parasitic in that it gets some of its nutrition from the roots of neighbouring plants.
