Western Brown Elfin Butterfly, Callophrys augustinus
The Western Brown Elfin Butterfly is the most widespread of Canadian Elfins. Part of its Latin name is after Augustus, a Canadian Inuit guide. This insect is small and the underside of the wings is divided with a dark brown inner part and a lighter brown outer part where there is a row of small black dots. It can often be found sipping moisture from wet areas of sand or soil. It is fairly common and enjoys the boreal zone but also finds suitable habitat in the southern parts of Canada.
