Suet Block Feeders |
| |
Here are two simple ideas to help make your suet feeder a little more attractive and useful for birds. |
| |
|
You can purchase the wire cages for suet blocks in the pet and animals department of many stores. They can be hung from branches or hangers but with a few bits if wood and some simple carpentry, you can make an attractive feature that will provide some weather protection and help the birds feed as well.
The first design, above, has an extra long piece of wood. This is particularly helpful for woodpeckers as they use their tails for extra balance and support while hanging on to the cage. |

Adding a small extra piece of wood, in this case a piece of bark, creates a simple roof which protects the suet from the rain. Install a small hook and attach some wire so you can hang it up.
You can put a suet cake into the cage or just a piece of suet from the butcher shop. For some home-made suet recipes, check out our page of recipes by clicking here. |

Once the feeder was set up it was quickly discovered by the Red-breasted Nuthatches and
Chestnut-backed Chickadees. |

|
The Bushtits found the new food source right away and were willing to share with each other. |

|
You can also make a smaller feeder if you prefer. |
|
| |
Be sure to hang the feeders in locations that safe from cats.
A lot of pleasure is provided by the birds if you've hung the feeder visible from your window. |
