Flat Topped Nest Box
Here's another interesting nest box project with a rather unique design. You'll need a 6-inch fencing board, some nails and screws, electric saw, drill hammer and screw driver.
|
Drawing for a template
Make a pattern using a sheet of graph paper. Fold the paper in half and draw the shape with the measures as shown in the photograph
|
Templates
Cut out the shape and unfold the paper. You might want to make a stronger template with cardboard.
|
Using the template
Wood is cut and holes drilled.
Use the pattern to draw two of the shapes on the fencing board. These will be the front and back pieces.
Cut them out and drill a 1-1/8 inch hole about two inches down and in the centre. Drill two 1/8 inch holes 3/8 inch from the bottom of each piece and 1.5 inches from the sides.
|
__
Front and back pieces screwed onto the base
The bottom of the nest box is 5 3/8 inches x 4 inches. It's cut short so that the roof sections can be fitted properly. Use 1.5 inch screws to attach the front and back pieces to the bottom using the previously drilled holes. The front or back can be unscrewed later for cleaning.
|
Sides attached
Cut the two sides from the board, each 7 inches long. Attach them to the front and back with 1.5 inch nails.
|
Roof added
The roof or ridge cap is a piece of the 6-inch board cut 4.5 inches long.
Nail it onto the back and front pieces.
|
Batten is added
Wood is added
A lath or batten 2 inches wide and 4 or 5 inches longer than the height of the box can be screwed onto the back. A hole for a screw near the top and bottom can be used to fasten the nest box to a post or tree.
Small pieces of bark or other wood can be used to finish off the box. One on the front of the ridge cap will close any open spots while another at the bottom adds a nice feature. It will have to be removed, however, for cleaning out the box.

The finished nest box
You might want to consider painting your final project.
Try to avoid bright colours as you want the box to blend in with the surroundings.
