The Great Basin desert is an interesting area which covers a vast part southwestern US including almost all of Nevada, western Utah and parts of Oregon. It is an usual region because there is no outlet to the ocean for any of the rivers and waters which flow through or fall on the mountains and valleys.
Great Basin National Park protects this corner of a vast region and all of its diversity. |

Great Basin National Park is not just desert and mountains for here are some very interesting underground wonders: the Lehman Caves.
Since the 1880s people have been venturing across vast distances to visit these caves and see all sorts of bizarre and fascinating structures such as shields and draperies; stalactites and stalagmites.

Rising from a sea of sagebrush, the peaks of Great Basin rise up to over 12,000 ft/3657 m with Wheeler Peak being the highest at 13063 ft/3982 m. In these high altitudes one can hike, explore and encounter groves of ancient Bristlecone Pine trees. These weathered and gnarled looking trees are some of the oldest living things on the planet.
