Brown Pelican
Brown Pelican, Pelecanus occidentalis
The Brown Pelican is one of two pelicans found in North America, the other being the American White Pelican. This is an easy-to-distinguish bird with its enormous size, long bill and large wings. The Brown Pelican feeds by diving into the water.

It has made a remarkable comeback in recent decades following the banning of DDT in the early 1970s. Today there are large numbers inhabiting the coasts of the United States.

The Brown Pelican is the state bird of Louisiana.
