The stunning Pileated Woodpecker is one of the largest woodpeckers in North America. Its most obvious feature is the brilliant red crest present in both males and females. The male (below) also has a red moustache.

Pileated Woodpeckers are a delight to encounter swooping through the forests. They need a large range and as a result are rarely abundant.
