December 2013 - Northern Cardinal
|
Male Northern Cardinal
Northern Cardinal, Cardinalis cardinalis
The beautiful Northern Cardinal got its name because the lovely red plumage of the male is said to resemble the red robes of Roman Catholic Cardinals. The female (below) lacks the poppy-red colour, but is still very attractive. The Northern Cardinal is one of the most widely recognized birds in North America. Its range is limited to eastern and southern North america, but is expanding northward.
