The Chipping Sparrow is a delightful North American sparrow, generally grey in colour with a rusty orangish upperside. It has a thin black eye-line and white eyebrow (supercilium) and rather long tail. Its most distinguishing feature is a reddish-brown crown. It gets its common name from the high-pitch chip-chip call which you might hear before you spot the bird. It feeds by hopping along the ground or on outer branches of trees in search of seeds and invertebrates.
