Red-winged Blackbird, Agelaius phoeniceus
Red-winged Blackbird, Agelaius phoeniceus
Only the male of this species has the characteristic red-orange shoulder patches which gives this bird its common name. It ranges across North America and down to central America, although northern populations migrate south for the winter. The males return to their beloved wetlands and marshes about a week before the females, staking out their territory.
