#21 - The Cattle Egret
The Cattle Egret, Bubulcus ibis, is a small member of the heron family of birds originally from the old world.
It has now extended its range and is found in parts of the southern U.S. and into southern Canada.
Cattle Egret
The Cattle Egret is easy to identify with its white plumage, yellow bill, legs and feet as well as a buff-orange coloured patches on its crown, breast and back, although these patches are lacking in nonbreeding and immature birds. It stands about 19-21 in/48-53 cm tall and has a wingspan of 35 in/89 cm.
Cattle Egret
The Cattle Egret gets its name from the fact that is feeds in fields on insects and grubs that are disturbed by livestock. At dusk it will fly to roost in trees with other egrets.
Cattle Egret
The range of the Cattle Egret is gradually expanding in North America. Some migrate from cooler areas to warmer ones, while others in more temperate zones are year-round residents.
